Haere mai - come along to this FREE talk by Professor Lachy Paterson on preserving New Zealand's newspaper heritage. Event open to the public - please feel welcome to attend.

Any New Zealander with a computer and a passion for the past is sure to have dabbled on “Papers Past”, perusing our country’s historical newspapers. Unfortunately, not all papers have been digitised and put online. Indeed, some titles are held by community groups, or in small museums and libraries, at risk of being lost due to deterioration, accident, or simply being taken to the dump.

The Preserving Local History and Educational Trust / Te Pupuri i nga Hitori o te Rohe Trust is a registered charity, whose aim is to identify and digitise historic newspapers, especially those at risk, and make them available to the public until we can pass them on to Papers Past. For example, late last year we gifted them the Marlborough Express (1921-1952), Taupo Times (1952-1974), and Waimarino Bulletin / Ruapehu Bulletin (1983-2001). More recently we digitised later issues of the Opotiki News (1951-1971 & 1981), which are now available on our own repository.

Please come along to hear about our work, and how you could possibly help in the preservation of New Zealand’s newspaper heritage.
