DRIVING his single-seater race car, Asher Morgan has taken a clean sweep in the final regional round of the 2024 CT Civil New Zealand Offroad Racing Championship.
Racing at the Dalton’s Tect Park offroad raceway on Saturday, September 7, Morgan proved able to win from any grid position, winning class five for race cars with engines up to 1.3 litres and extending his championship points lead to take maximum points to the national final in Auckland next month.
For the Eastern Bay drivers, there were a mix of top results and crashes.
Otakiri’s Gary Baker wheeled out his American-built Pro4 race truck and took a string of podium finishes across the four heats for unlimited race trucks.
Up against unlimited truck class points leader Nick Leahy, seasoned racer Richard Crabb, in another American-built truck, and Ash Carlyle, in a rear-wheel-drive Prolite, Baker took two third placings, a second placing and a win.
Baker’s daughter, Kenna, suffered a flat tyre in one of her heats and was up against four experienced racers in the UTV U class, but completed all her races.
The race day ended early for Jared McGillivray, who rolled his UTV while leading his first heat. He was unhurt but the car was too badly damaged to continue racing.
“I got a bit wide in one corner and whacked something hard, then couldn’t get the car settled before the next corner and over she went,” he said.
A total of 52 teams contested the event, which was the sixth and last regional round of the 2024 championship.
