Oliver the musical, Whakatane Little Theatre
Oliver
THEATRE Whakatāne’s rendition of Oliver is a captivating evening filled with laughter and heartwarming moments, showcasing the remarkable talent of our local performers.
Under the direction of John Drummond (Into the Woods and The Phantom of the Opera), this fresh take on Lionel Bart’s adaptation of Charles Dickens’ beloved tale brings vibrant energy to the stage.
From the moment the curtain opens, the audience is transported to the gritty yet colourful world of Victorian London, where young Oliver Twist – played endearingly by Roger Blackburn – navigates the harsh realities of first life in an orphanage and then on the streets.
The standout ensemble of 36 actors brings infectious enthusiasm to the performance, including 14 talented young performers who seamlessly switch between the roles of orphans and Fagin’s gang.
Oliver’s journey introduces him to the Artful Dodger, portrayed with charm by Jackson Gundersen, and to the cunning yet loveable rogue Fagin, brilliantly brought to life by Craig Davson. His rendition of You’ve Got to Pick a Pocket alongside the gang of young thieves is a true highlight, as is his hilarious performance of Reviewing the Situation.
The show, with musical direction by Maurice Reid, boasts a delightful repertoire, featuring well-known numbers like Food, Glorious Food and Consider Yourself, sure to leave audiences humming for days. Additional memorable songs such as Oom-Pah-Pa and It’s a Fine Life, and many more, are delivered with infectious energy, complemented by stunning choreography from Andie Martin.
The tension in the story builds effectively with the menacing presence of Bill Sykes, played with intensity, and Rodene Blackwell’s emotional portrayal of Nancy, creating a powerful contrast. Comedic moments are expertly delivered by Andrew Smith as Mr Bumble and Sarah Holmes-Reid as Widow Corney.
The dedicated backstage team has created stunning sets and costumes that beautifully capture the essence of Dickens’ world.
Oliver is a captivating production that showcases the remarkable talents of Theatre Whakatāne’s cast and crew. This heartfelt story, filled with memorable songs and stunning performances, is not to be missed.
The show opens tonight and runs until October 5, featuring both 7pm shows and matinees for families seeking an earlier option.
Don’t miss your chance to grab tickets for a night of joy, laughter, and perhaps a tear or two.
