Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi is hosting three events in Whakatāne this week, showcasing Indigenous research excellence and celebrating student achievement.
The Iwi Taketake Symposium today marks the largest gathering of doctoral candidates in the wānanga’s history.
Presentations will explore kaupapa including hapū identity, Te Hāhi Ringatū, Māori midwifery, and moko revitalisation.
The event also features the launch of the inaugural Iwi Taketake Journal, a curated collection of research from the institution’s indigenous PhD scholars.
This evening, the wānanga will host its first Distinguished Alumni Awards, recognising graduates who have made outstanding contributions in their fields, nationally and internationally.
The celebrations culminate with the 2025 Graduation Ceremony on Friday.
A pōwhiri will open the day, followed by the vibrant “Gown and Town” hikoi through the Whakatāne CBD and a formal award ceremony.
