Arts Masterclass is thrilled to be holding its first workshop in Whakatāne this month.
To be held on June 21 at the War Memorial Hall, attendees will be creating a handmade mosaic lamp.
Angelina Ooi, an instructor and head of communications at Auckland-based Arts Masterclass, said during the two-and-a-half-hour workshop instructors teach those attending how to design and create their own Turkish mosaic lamps.
“It’s a guided, one-off class where participants of any artistic level can attend,” she said.
First step is to choose the lamp size you would like to work with – ranging from a tea-light candle holder to more of a statement piece moon lamp.
“From there, our instructors guide you through the designing, glueing and, lastly, the plastering.
“It’s a satisfyingly fun process, plus you get a complimentary Turkish tea and treat in the process.”
Ooi said they were very excited to be doing their first workshop in Whakatāne.
“Our workshops began from a cosy, little Auckland studio mid-2023. We started off with regularly scheduled classes but were limited in terms of class sizes and location.
“Since then, we’ve been lucky enough to travel around the North Island to teach our craft.”
Ooi said they had received requests from Whakatāne to hold a workshop here – “especially from those who weren’t able to make it to either our Rotorua or Tauranga pop-ups, so it’s about time we’ve popped up here”.
There is no age limit, and they have had participants from as young as six take part.
“For our pop-ups there are a few of us skilled instructors who run the class. As for the audience, anyone can attend.”
People also liked to book a class for an event, such as a birthday or a bridal party, she said.
