Letter: Flood wall question

.

Clive McIndoe

Just an observation, behind the screen security fence in Quay Street opposite the Bay of Plenty Regional Council building, the new flood wall is near completion.

There seems to be a large volume of reinforcing steel in the top section of the flood wall.

Was this engineered in-house in the regional council or were consultants involved

Bay of Plenty Regional Council responds:

As part of Stage Two of Project Future Proof a new concrete floodwall is being constructed along the river side of Quay Street.

Reinforcing bar is being used as part of construction.

The work is progressing well with approximately nine sections (54 metres) complete.  Most of the first 85m of the floodwall will be completed over the next fortnight with the last 15m at the eastern end to follow once future works are completed.

The regional council is managing the overall engineering for Project Future Proof.  Part of this work has involved using specialist design experts to ensure the work meets New Zealand standards and codes for a project of this size and scale.
