The front-page story in Wednesday’s Beacon about Sandy Milne entering the local council election put a real smile on my face.

I’ve enjoyed reading and re-reading his occasional letters to the Beacon and I have to say, he’s a man that I greatly respect, even when I think he’s wrong.

I’ve met him a couple of times and it’s always been a cordial conversation. We even exchange the odd email.

I think Sandy and I would be the perfect pair to fill the vacancies on the Whakatāne District Council. One from each side of the fence and both with respect for the other’s mana.

And let’s be frank, two fine men of Scottish persuasion watching over the way our council spend money has to be a good thing for ratepayers.
