Australian illusionist Anthony Street is bringing his all-ages magic show to Whakatāne’s Little Theatre next month.
A blend of traditional magic and modern spectacle, the one-hour matinee show on July 11 will wow its audience with larger-than-life illusions and mind tricks that will leave them questioning reality – miraculously appearing motorcycles, teleportation and more.
It was at a carnival that the Street first fell in love with illusions. He was just eight years old.
“I watched the magician there and I was instantly hooked,” he said.
“That year Santa Claus gave me a magic set for Christmas.”
From there Street became obsessed with the craft, staging shows for his parents and cousins over subsequent years.
He also fell in love with dancing, landing his first professional job at age 11. As a teenager, his passion turned to Irish dance, and he landed a part in Michael Flateley’s Lord of the Dance.
As a dancer and illusionist, he has been touring New Zealand and Australia since 2009 with previous tours including Celtic Illusion, Ballroom Blitz and Spellbound.
This tour will be his first production solely focused on illusions.
“It’s our first all magic show where I get to do some more talking, and audiences are getting to know me.”
He promises great illusions and opportunities for audience participation.
“I invite people on stage all the time – I ask if they’re happy to participate, but if you’d rather not be in the spotlight come, sit back and watch other people volunteer,” Street said.
Reviews have described the show as endearing, heartwarming and great for families.
“All ages are welcome. We recommend children aged five and up just because of the length – kids too young might get bored.”
As the founder of Base Entertainment, Street is his own producer and promoter, putting everything into his tours.
“It’s the only reason I can make a career out of it – I’ve taken the risk,” he said.
He has just completed a 63-show run around Australia.
“The response was amazing, kids love it, and people get really excited.”
