It was a goal fest for Whakatāne Town’s men’s and women’s teams as they scored 13 goals between them in an action-packed weekend.

The Sean Henderson-coached Whakatāne Town men’s Baywide division 1 team picked up an impressive 7-4 victory over Otumoetai in their clash at Fergusson Park.

Nathan White scored a double, as did Louis Thomas, with Whakatāne playing some good attacking football when given space.

It was a much-needed victory for Town, who have been struggling to find the goal of late.

Mitchell White scored for Whakatāne Town with his first touch of the ball in the opening minute before his brother, Nathan, added his first goal three minutes later, bringing the score to 2-0 inside the opening five minutes.

Thomas added the first of his goals two minutes later and before long, Otumoetai sprang into life with a couple of their own, then an own goal for Town saw six goals landed in the opening 17 minutes.

Things settled down for the remainder of the half and Town went into halftime two goals ahead.

It took a little longer for scoring in the second stanza with Otumoetai cutting Town’s lead to a single goal.

A minute later, Noah Vullings scored Town’s fifth of the day.

Thomas netted his second before Nathan White did the same to shut out any hope of an Otumoetai comeback.

It was a change of tactics that worked wonders for Town, who often play a conservative style, but this weekend changed things up.

Whakatāne Town return to Rex Morpeth Park this weekend and will be hoping for more of the same as they face Te Puke for the first time this season. Their previous clash was postponed to August because it clashed with a cup game for Whakatāne.

In the women’s clash, skipper Abby Brogden continued her fine form in front of goal with an outstanding hattrick, while Kiahli Lambert, Molly Wratt and Daisy Jones also added their names to the team sheet with goals.

Town produced a superb showing in what were challenging football conditions.

Chloe Burgess and Chelsea Brown were outstanding, while Lakes FC will be looking for revenge.

Town coach James Anthony expects this weekend to be no different against Lakes FC.
