Bay of Plenty Regional Council has delivered an abatement notice to an Ōhope property for unauthorised wastewater discharge after the discovery of a pit latrine.
The council has warned at least 14 bore water users around the Harbour Road property not to use water from their bores because of potential contamination from the long-drop toilet.
There is also concern that unregistered bores the council is not aware of may be impacted.
There is no risk to people using the Whakatāne District Council reticulated water supply.
Targeted groundwater sampling has been done, a formal abatement notice delivered to the property under the Resource Management Act, and the council is working with the property owner on compliance.
Anyone in the potentially affected area between Turnball Place and Wainui Road is asked to contact the Pollution Hotline on 0800 884 883 for advice.
