Motocross rider Darren Capill has shown he still has the goods, picking up multiple wins at the recent National Veterans Motocross Championships in Whangarei.
Capill was in terrific form to take six impressive wins across the two days of racing.
He has numerous national veterans’ titles but says these wins were just as sweet.
Winning all five of the races in his class and the handicap race, which included riders from other grades, showed Capill he still had the skills on the bike to succeed.
“I knew if I could get off to a good start, I could hold off my other challengers and be too fast for them.”
He particularly enjoyed the handicap race, testing himself against the younger riders.
He said the track in Whangarei provided a good challenge; different from others he had raced on.
“It was an all-natural terrain, purpose-built track and many people were racing there for the first time.
“Everything went well; the bike was tip top, and it was a good weekend.
“The weather provided the riders with a taste of everything, and it
was nice to come away with some wins.”
He’s pleased with his season so far.
“When you get to this age, you do what you can,” he said.
“Other priorities take over.
“I try and go riding when it suits. The key races, you pick them and then try and aim for them.”
Prior to national veterans, he competed at MX Fest, where he also came out on top.
“This gave me a good indication of how I was tracking and what my speed was like, and I was fortunate to carry that on at nationals.”
The focus is now on practising for Summercross, which is the next event on his agenda.
“It’s always a harder event to win at because you come up against younger riders, but it’s always good to race on the home track and a good challenge for me.”
