A $13,725 grant from the New Zealand Community Trust has helped Tarawera Trail Bike Riders Club buy a new Honda SXS700 side-by-side rescue vehicle to help keep its riders safe during trail events.
Club secretary Nicola McIlroy said the club had undergone a major overhaul this year and replacing ageing equipment was essential to keep operations running smoothly, especially the new side-by-side for maintenance and rider recovery.”
The club, which attracts around 150 riders to each event, is run by a small team of volunteers committed to creating trail rides for all ages and stages of riding.
Most rides are designed so everyone can enjoy them – from family groups introducing young riders to the trails, to experienced riders who take on the extremely difficult sections.
The new rescue vehicle will support these volunteers by helping them reach injured riders quickly in challenging terrain and by assisting with year-round track maintenance.
“As the first responders in case of accidents on our trail rides, it’s vital for the club to have a reliable recovery vehicle to ensure we’re able to reach any members who break down or get injured,” Ms McIlroy said.
Jason P is a club rider who knows firsthand the importance of such support after coming off his bike at an event.
“The team were very professional and took my safety seriously and picked me and my bike up quickly, making sure I was okay and even checked up on me after the event.
“The track was marked with checkpoints and sweep riders coming through all the time, so it was so easy to relay back to base to get me sorted.”
NZCT’s general manager of grants marketing and communications Ben Hodges said volunteers put in huge effort to run safe and fun rides for everyone.
“We’re delighted to help them get the gear they need to look after riders living their best lives out on the trails.”
Established in the mid-1970s by local enthusiasts, Tarawera Trail Bike Riders Club has grown into one of the region’s most recognised trail-riding groups.
Run by a small team of volunteers, the club delivers monthly rides from May to October (weather and fire season permitting), catering for all ages and skill levels – from beginners and family groups to expert riders seeking a challenge.
Around 150 riders attend each event from across the North Island, supported by local businesses and a dedicated community of volunteers who help build and maintain the tracks.
