Community comes together for Christmas lunch

Tamara Herdman

The annual Community Christmas Lunch was a resounding success this year, drawing a larger-than-expected crowd and showcasing the strength of local generosity, connection, and community spirit.

Held on Christmas Day, the event welcomed community members from across the district to share a meal and celebrate together.

Attendance exceeded expectations, with organisers setting up three additional tables as more people continued to arrive throughout the day.

They estimate about 300 people attended.

Whakatāne Mayor Nandor Tanczos attended, saying during a Facebook Live broadcast that the event was an indication of the “massive heart and generosity” existing within the community.

A dedicated team of volunteers ensured the day ran smoothly, from food preparation and serving to welcoming guests and coordinating activities throughout the event.

Organiser Chris Barnard said the lunch was a “huge success” and a culmination of a full year of quiet, behind-the-scenes work by many volunteers.

Ange Jackson was MC, engaging everyone warmly and inclusively and helping to create a welcoming atmosphere for all.
