Book lovers are encouraged to mark Friday on their calendars as the Ōhope Lions Club prepares for its annual book fair, with thousands of good quality books on offer.
The popular fundraising event will be held at the Ōhope Community Hall on Bluett Road from Friday to Sunday. Doors open at 9am each day, with the fair running until 4pm on Friday and Saturday, and 12pm on Sunday.
Book fair organiser Linda Husband said the event continued to attract locals and visitors, with some travelling from as far as Taupō and Rotorua to browse the extensive collection.
“It’s become a bit of a drawcard,” she said. “People plan their holidays around it, especially those with holiday homes in the area.”
All funds raised from the book fair are returned directly to the community, with proceeds supporting tertiary scholarships and trade apprenticeship assistance for students.
Each year, the Lions Club works closely with high schools to identify deserving applicants, with a scholarship committee selecting recipients who demonstrate both need and commitment to giving back to the community.
The books on sale have been carefully sorted over recent months by club members, with donations received from across the Bay of Plenty and beyond. Mrs Husband said maintaining quality is a priority.
“We’re known for good-quality books,” she said.
“Our volunteers ask themselves; would we pay good money for this book? If the answer is no, it doesn’t make it out to the tables.”
Books will be priced at $3, and a children’s corner complete with bean bags and seating will have children’s books for $1. A classics table will also feature well-known authors and timeless favourites.
To keep the selection fresh, stock will be replenished daily during the three-day fair. Payments can be made by cash, EFTPOS or credit card, and PayWave is also available.
Visitors are encouraged to bring their own sturdy bags, although some will be available on site.
A coffee cart will also be operating during the event, and ample parking is available at the hall.
Mrs Husband said the move to the community hall in recent years had been a positive change, providing a weather-proof, easily accessible venue that is comfortable for browsers.
“It’s a big undertaking for a small club. The more successful the book fair is, the more we can give back to local young people.”
