Scones and a cuppa for the Beacon ‘loyals’

.

Twice a week, more than 2000 people start their day with a walk to the letterbox to collect their copy of the Beacon.

About 900 of them have been doing this for more than 35 years.

In a time when more and more people are choosing to consume their news online, their loyalty is appreciated – and worthy of acknowledgement – so the Beacon is celebrating their long-term readership with monthly morning teas.

The first, held before Christmas, was attended by 13 people.

More  “Beacon Loyals” morning teas are planned from February, with invitations progressively going out to all long-term subscribers.

Beacon managing director John Spring said the morning tea for the Beacon Loyals was a lovely occasion.

“There were a lot of reflections on how the Beacon has changed, what they like and don’t like, while enjoying a cup of tea and scones.

“I talked about the history of the Beacon, which was started by my father, Leicester, in 1939.

“Our editor, Neryda McNabb, explained her role and answered their tricky questions.

“We are very grateful for their support and look forward to more morning teas.”

Reflecting on numbers, Mr Spring said Beacon Media Group also had seven staff who had been with the group for over 35 years – an “amazing record”.
