Letter: Pride in school gardens

.

Jude Marsh

In Wednesday’s Beacon, I read a letter to the editor written by Suzanne Williams, Musings of a rhubarb thief.

I wish to inform Ms Williams that all our local schools have dedicated groups of teachers, grounds people, caretakers and students who thoroughly enjoy planting and nurturing gardens and sharing the produce among fellow students.

It is unfortunate that when the end of the school year arrives some of the eatable produce in the school gardens are not ready to be consumed and can be left unattended. School is out, holidays beckon.

I know firsthand that the students are taught about food values and good eating choices during their time at primary school.

Please teachers, caretakers, grounds-people and students, keep up your great work.

To see the look of pride and achievement on students faces when you are offered some fresh produce from their gardens is to be seen and remembered.

Maybe Ms Williams could make some rhubarb chutney and drop it off to Allandale School to use with their next fundraising munchy- lunch or sausage sizzle.

Keep on gardening during the school year, it is good for the soul.
