Homeless rumours unfounded

Whakatāne police say there is no initiative to “move on” homeless people, despite rumours circulating in the community.

Senior Sergeant Cam Mackinnon said officers were continuing to respond to any disruptive behaviour reported by the public.

Homeless people are regularly moved on when they blocked entrances, footpaths, or public facilities, including the female toilets on Boon Street.

He said police were working with council and community services and he encouraged CBD businesses and residents to report any issues.

“There’s no golden ticket solution to homelessness. For my staff to do their job, we need the public’s help to report errant behaviour by any persons, including homeless people.”
