Police have confirmed that a child has died after a water-related incident in Opotiki on Monday.

Senior Sergeant Richard Miller said at around 3.10pm, emergency services were called to a private address on Wellington Street after a report of a person in need of assistance in water.

"Upon arrival, a child was located in a critical condition and was transported to hospital.

"Sadly, despite best efforts of medical professionals they passed away in hospital Wednesday afternoon.

"Our thoughts are with the deceased's family and loved ones during this difficult time."

Police's enquiries into the circumstances of the incident are ongoing.
