More heavy rain on the way

With parts of the Eastern Bay still reeling from last week’s heavy rain, Whakatāne District Council has warned residents to expect a big soaking over the next 24 hours.

Yesterday, MetService issued an orange heavy rain warning for the 20 hours from 1pm today until 9am tomorrow and the council warned that there was “a genuine chance this could escalate”.

“MetService has also flagged there’s a 30-to-60 percent chance this warning could be upgraded to a red warning, so while it’s not time to panic, it is time to pay attention.”

Some areas could see 180mm to 240mm of rain, with heavy bursts falling at 25mm to 35mm an hour.

The council warned that this amount of rain could lead to streams and rivers rising quickly, with flooding possible.

Slips are expected, especially near steep slopes, escarpments, and cliffs.

After people had to be airlifted out of Waioeka Gorge last week because of slips, people are being warned to avoid driving if possible.

Motorists are warned to slow down and leave space as roads could become slippery fast.

People can prepare for the heavy rain by considering relocating if they are in a low-lying or risky spot near a steep cliff.

“Clear drains, gutters and anything that collects water, and secure anything around your property which has the potential to become a flying missile.
