Letter: Scam warning

.

On Friday, January 23, my wife and I attended the Slumberzone Factory Direct sale at the War Memorial Hall.

We purchased a couple of items and paid for them on their portable Eftpos machine with my Visa card, (which I had not used since November 7 last year.) We then went home.

On Tuesday, January 27, I checked our bank statement and was horrified to see that there had been a payment made with our Visa card to CEBU Air Inc, which is a legitimate airline in the Philippines.

Luckily, our bank’s (ASB Whakatāne) fraud department noticed the transaction and reversed the payment.

I have notified the police and written to Slumberzone to let them know what happened.

I did make it clear that I did not have any complaint about the company’s staff or products.

The saleswoman was very professional, and I do not think she was at fault but perhaps the Eftpos machine had been hacked with a skimming device.

This is just a heads up in case any other customers have been scammed, and for them to double check their bank statements.
