Police are investigating a gang-related assault outside The Warehouse in Whakatāne.
The incident involved a group of youths attacking another youth in an unprovoked assault recently.
The victim was reportedly targeted for wearing a red hat.
Senior Sergeant Cam Mackinnon said the attack highlighted a need for police in the central business district.
“Police are willing to increase their presence in town; the recent incident outside The Warehouse highlights the need for that.”
Members of the public who witnessed the incident or who have information that may assist police are asked to visit the Whakatāne Police Station and ask to speak with an officer regarding the matter.
Police are also reminding the public to report incidents of disorder when they occur.
While acknowledging that bystanders may feel compelled to intervene, Mr Mackinnon advises caution.
“Some of these individuals may be carrying weapons, so I urge the public to be careful before they intervene,” he said.
“Even filming the incident from a safe distance can be helpful to police during the investigation.”
