The Galatea community gathered at the Galatea Community Hall on Monday to rededicate the newly refurbished memorial flagpole.

Galatea was predominantly settled by returned servicemen who balloted for the opportunity to purchase and develop farms in the region after returning home from war.

The hall itself was built by settlers and opened in 1952 as part of the district’s establishment, with the memorial flagpole erected soon after.

Galatea resident Dave Silcock took part in the dedication ceremony and spoke about the meaning behind the monument.

“For returned servicemen and women, the flag represents a sacred symbol of service, sacrifice, and comradeship.

“The Galatea War Memorial Hall was built after World War II by those who settled here. The memorial flagpole, flying the New Zealand flag, became closely tied to the memory of those who died in battle, making it a focal point for remembrance,” he said.

“For many veterans, along with their families and descendants, our flag remains a tangible connection to their military service and the sacrifice of those who never returned.”

Sara Coma, a long-time Galatea resident, recalled being a student at the local school when the memorial flagpole was first installed.

“I was in standard five or six when the school announced a competition to design the flagpole. I didn’t win, a fellow student, Ray Bell, did.

“We were all gathered around, excited, when it was erected,” she said.

Today, the hall continues to serve not only the Galatea community but neighbouring Galatea School. With a fully functional commercial-grade kitchen, it regularly provides meals for students and hosts a variety of school activities.

The Galatea RSA, formed in 1945, closed after the Rotorua branch wound up its affairs in 2015. As the Rotorua RSA owned the Galatea RSA building, the local branch was also forced to shut its doors.

Through community pledges, Galatea residents eventually banded together to purchase the building for just over half the asking price, preventing its demolition and keeping it in local ownership.

Despite these changes, the War Memorial Hall and its flagpole remain deeply significant to Galatea’s returned servicemen and their families, standing as enduring symbols of remembrance and community spirit.
