Anyone curious about quilting – whether keen to learn or simply admire the craft – is invited to the Eastbay Quilters Open Day later this month.
The event will be held from 10am to 2pm on Saturday, March 28, at the Art House on the corner of McAlister and Short streets. Visitors will be able to view a variety of handmade quilts and talk to members about how the group works and how to get involved.
Member Margaret McKerras said the group hoped the open day would encourage more people to discover the enjoyment of quilting.
“We want everyone to come along and see what we do, how easy it is and how many people we have,” she said. “We’re ready to help, and we’d love the public to come in because we’re always looking for new members.”
Eastbay Quilters has about 21 members who meet three Thursday mornings each month at the Art House. The gatherings provide a relaxed space where quilters can stitch, share ideas and learn new techniques.
“We welcome beginners,” said fellow member Kay Ives.
“We have a range of different expertise in the group, and there’s always someone eager to help a newbie,” said McKerras. “Whether it’s piecing, binding or quilting.”
As well as creating quilts for their own enjoyment, members also give some of their work to worthy causes, such as Women’s Refuge, hospice and children’s and oncology wards.
The group also holds an annual exhibition each May.
