New signs have gone up on Landing Road letting drivers know to slow down and be aware of elderly people in the vicinity.
Sheaffs Rest Home staff say they have been pushing to make the road safer for residents to cross for at least 20 years, but every time previously that they asked the council to install signs, they were brushed off.
They asked again just before Christmas and, shortly after, new mayor Nandor Tanczos responded to their email saying new signs would go up in mid-February.
Since the signs’ installation, residents have been going for more walks along the footpath because they feel safer.
Staff have noticed that some drivers are slowing between the signs, but not everyone sees them.
They would still like to see more infrastructure such as a crosswalk put in, so the residents can safely cross the road and get to their physio, dentist, and hairdresser appointments.
The signs are located on Landing Road outside Lumino dentist and at the Eivers Road roundabout.
Council transport manager Ann-Elise Reynolds said she was not aware of any previous request, but when the concerns were raised in December, the council did its best to react quickly.
“Keeping vulnerable road users safe when they are out and about is a priority,” she said.
There are no further roading infrastructure upgrades planned for the area, but Ms Reynolds said, improved pedestrian crossing facilities along Landing and Domain roads had been identified as needed.
The rest home is grateful for how fast the council acted and hopes drivers will take note of the signs and slow down.
