Wharaurangi on The Strand came alive with music, movement and vibrant energy on Saturday morning as the annual Dance Carnival delighted crowds of all ages.

The much-loved event showcased a diverse and dynamic line-up, celebrating dance in its many forms. From the passion and flair of Evelyn King Munoz’s flamenco troupe to the high-energy hip-hop performances by Steps Dance School, the programme offered something for everyone. Audiences were also treated to belly dancing, Bollywood, rock ’n’ roll, Israeli dance, jazz, salsa, line dancing and even performance poetry.

Families, friends and dance enthusiasts gathered to enjoy the colourful spectacle, with many staying for the full programme.

“The Dance Carnival is a great opportunity to bring our dance community together,” organiser Beryl Wilson said.

“Seeing the joy on the dancers’ faces and the support from the audience made it all worthwhile.”

The event was not about watching, either. Audience members were invited to join in, taking part in a lively line dance and a bachata session.

Performers said they were grateful for the chance to share their passion and perform in front of an appreciative crowd.

The Dance Carnival is part of Arts Whakatāne’s Summer Arts Programme, with sponsorship from Creative Communities, 1XX and Trust Horizon.
