Ōpōtiki Primary School did well despite rain at Awakeri Top Schools event on Sunday.

The year 5-and-6 team took first place in its division, while years 7 and 8 secured second place overall behind overall winners, Tāneatua School.

Principal Tony Howe said the teams competed with “heart, skill, and exemplary teamwork”.

The students had to navigate five relay challenges, involving strength, speed, agility, balance and team work.

The school’s cheerleading team delivered a stunning, high-energy performance earning them the Cheer Off Shield for their acrobatic skill and enthusiasm.

“Their coach, Clare Whyte, let them have a big say in what they did and they took up the challenge and did really well,” said Mr Howe.

He thanked the many family members who travelled to Awakeri to provide vocal support and encouragement in the rain.
