Tickets are on sale and rehearsals are in full swing for Theatre Whakatāne’s upcoming production of Matilda the Musical – a high-energy, heartwarming show set to captivate audiences.
Directed by Trace Tidd, with choreography by Sam McLeod and musical direction by Adele Dixon, the production brings together a strong creative team.
Tidd, who previously directed Little Shop of Horrors for Theatre Whakatāne and as principal has worked extensively on shows as Stage Door Performing Arts Academy said she leapt at the chance to take on the much-loved Matilda the Musical.
Based on the classic story by Roald Dahl, with music and lyrics by Tim Minchin and a stage adaptation by Dennis Kelly, Matilda the Musical combines wit, emotion and unforgettable songs.
“Musically, Matilda is absolutely brilliant,” Tidd said.

“It’s a moving and beautiful piece of theatre and being part of that story is incredibly appealing. I’m also passionate about working with young people, and this show really puts them in the spotlight.”
The story follows Matilda, a bright and courageous young girl with a vivid imagination and extraordinary abilities.
Neglected by her parents, she finds comfort in books and encouragement from her kind teacher, Miss Honey, played by Jess Walker.
School life is far from easy under the fearsome headmistress Miss Trunchbull, portrayed by Pete Tihema.
Tidd describes the production as a celebration of resilience, imagination and standing up for what’s right.
“It’s a story that champions the underdog, with humour and emotional depth.
“It inspires bravery and reminds us that our voices matter.”

The musical, she said, cleverly combined dark humour, heartfelt themes, and stunning music – and was a fantastic community theatre production.
The show features a large cast of more than 50 performers, supported by an equally dedicated behind-the-scenes team. More than 100 people auditioned, reflecting strong enthusiasm.
Sharing the demanding title role are three young performers – Sarah-Jane Ford, Kyla McNiven and Orla Rumball – supported by two children’s casts as well as adult, youth and vocal ensembles.
“They’re all very different, and we’re celebrating that individuality,” Tidd said of the three Matildas.
“It’s a big and taxing role, and they’ve done a great job of working together, learning together and supporting and encouraging each other.”
Tidd is also pleased to reunite with McLeod and Dixon after their successful collaboration on Newsies Jr.
“We work well together and have a shared vision.”
Matilda the Musical opens at the Whakatāne Little Theatre on May 13 and runs through to May 30.
