Neighbourly garage sale makes winners

Best house: Steve and Angela Clark were delighted with their first prize package.

This year’s Great Douglas Street Garage Sale, held on Saturday, had more buyers visiting the street than ever before.

Organiser Poppy Jankasul said holding it on the same day as the Have a Heart Charitable Trust’s Expo and Family Festival, just down the road at Rex Morpeth Park, was a big boost.

In its fourth year, Ms Jankasul said even though there were fewer people selling this year, the usual energy, variety and community spirit was undiminished.

Sellers invited their friends and family from other areas to attend and sell their pre-loved items.

Two friendly police officers walked about chatting to folk and the St John Ambulance staff offered free blood pressure checks.

This year, the judging panel, which included Mayor Nandor Tanczos, awarded first prize for the best garage sale to Angela and Steve Clark.

The judges said the stall had a wide variety of items for sale, with prices well below what was expected.

The winners also showed great by helping to sell items on behalf of their neighbours.

Barbecue: Roimata Bennett, Te Atahaea Bennett-Hetet and Taumata Tawhai won third place prize for their delicious marinated barbecue sandwiches.
Prize winners: Cousins Duncan Kingi-Taitapanui and Kereama Taitapanui were selling home baking on their stall, which won second place in the competition.
