I wish to acknowledge the wonderful improvements Whakatāne District Council has made to the Ōhope Wharf and surrounding area; the refurbishment of the old shed, parking, landscaping and remedial work on the wharf. Over summer, locals and campers enjoy the entertainment, food and drinks and especially jumping off the wharf.
My concern is the need for additional anti-slip matting on the wharf.
When used by the many swimmers, the boards become very wet and slippery causing many young children and adults to have nasty falls when walking along the wharf.
The current matting is limited and, in some places, in need of repair. The anti-slip matting needs to be extended from the outdoor shower at the beginning of the wharf to the end of the jumping platform area. This will prevent injuries and enhance the fun.
