Whakatāne-born artist Jinan Dodd painted his second mural for Apanui School early last week, completing it within a day.
Mr Dodd said the mural is a “kaitiaki”; it watches over the school, reflecting the resilience and spirit of its tamariki and hapori.
The artwork carries a strong cultural meaning, acting as both protection and inspiration for the students each day.
Principal Marama Stewart said the mural idea came from one of the teachers, who wanted to create something that connected learning with art.
It includes letter sounds that match what students are learning in the classroom, similar to the more traditional snakes that are painted around schools, but with a unique and creative twist that reflects New Zealand culture.
Students were excited to watch the mural come to life, with some describing it as “cool” and “awesome”.
They said watching it get painted was special.
Mr Dodd’s first mural, done in 2023, is on the side of a classroom and is a valued part of the school environment.
Ms Stewart said she would love to see more murals added around the school in the future, helping to create a vibrant and inspiring space for students.
