Gorge and SH25 open for Easter

.

Waioweka Gorge, past the Goldsmith slip site, will open 24/7 under stop/go for Easter.

There will be no overnight closures through to 8pm on Tuesday. Night closures will resume Tuesday to Thursday between 8pm-6am with the gorge open under stop/go between 6am and 8pm.

From 6am on Friday, April 10, the gorge will be open 24/7 under stop/go, with closures only when necessary.

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi warns motorists can expect delays of up to one hour when stop/go is in place.

Meanwhile, State Highway 35 between Hicks Bay and Te Araroa is open with restrictions.

The stretch of SH35 around Punaruku slip was closed last Friday night after heavy rainfall made the slip site unsafe for drivers, but it is now open under stop/go during daylight hours, from 7.30am to 6pm, for light vehicles only. It will be closed overnight from 6pm to 7.30am until further notice.

NZTA said the road and surrounding area at Punaruku slip site was extremely fragile and unstable following the most recent rainfall.

Roadworkers have been onsite clearing ditches and working to address immediate slip issues, and the ongoing recovery and drainage works are also continuing as part of the wider recovery work.

Monitoring is continuing and closures may happen at short notice.
