It was a successful couple of days on the track and in the field for a group of Eastern Bay athletes in New Plymouth recently.
The NZ Masters Track and Field Championships featured the best masters’ athletes in New Zealand competing across a variety of age groups.
The Police and FENZ Track and Field Champs were held in conjunction with the NZ Masters Champs and for one Eastern Bay athlete it was a double successful weekend as she also works as a firefighter with FENZ.
The Eastern Bay athletes produced outstanding performances.
Sarah Hockley, competing in the 35-39 women’s age group, helped herself to gold in the shot put, gold in discus, and gold in the throws pentathlon, where she also broke a WAIBOP record.
Hockley then managed a silver medal in the javelin, which was a personal best throw and then capped off a superb couple of days with a silver in the 60m sprints.
Rachael Savage, in the 45-49 age group, was another who excelled in New Plymouth.
She helped herself to a personal best in the triple jump, earning gold, a personal best throw in the discus, where she nabbed a second gold, and her third was in the javelin, another pb. In the long jump she grabbed a silver medal and then backed that up with a personal best jump in the high jump to finish second.
Savage’s efforts didn’t end there; in the track pentathlon she bagged a silver medal, and it was also a WAIBOP record, while throwing her way to a bronze in the shot put and placing third in the throws pentathlon.
Brenda Davis showed her class – and why she has represented New Zealand on numerous occasions – with some dominant performances.
She won gold in the hammer throw and javelin, while also breaking New Zealand Championship records for the weighted throw and throws pentathlon.
Her efforts didn’t stop there as she nabbed silver in the shot put and discus.
In the Police and FENZ track and field event she won gold in the shot put, discus, weighted throw, throws pentathlon, javelin and hammer.
Ian Martin completed the Eastern Bay action by racing in the M70-74 age group.
His meet saw him win silver in the 60m and 200m, while bronze came his way in the 100m.
