Police urge motorists to take extra care over the school holidays.
Senior Sergeant Cam MacKinnon said drivers should focus on safe travel habits.
“You need to plan your journey and rest stops, and not just think about your destination.”
“Follow the rules and don’t be distracted. Cellphone use while driving being one distraction, If a policeman sees you on your cellphone, you can expect to be pulled over and given a ticket.”
He said motorists should also expect delays in the Waioweka Gorge and take care with worsening weather.
The gorge remains under stop/go traffic management, with delays possible and some overnight closures in place this week.
“Be patient and courteous,. With the anticipated weather event, plan ahead, and expect delays going through the gorge.”
“Keep a good, safe following distance, and stick to a safe speed … which is below the speed limit.”
