With Matilda the Musical set to light up the stage next month, three young performers are deep in rehearsals as they prepare to share one of musical theatre’s most demanding roles.
Sarah-Jane Ford, 12, Kyla McNiven, 11, and Orla Rumball, 11, will alternate in the title role, each bringing their own spark to the story of a clever and courageous girl with a vivid imagination – and a few extraordinary powers.
Directed by Trace Tidd, with choreography by Sam McLeod and musical direction by Adele Dixon, this Theatre Whakatāne production promises a lively mix of humour, heart and high-energy performance.
The trio say the story follows Matilda as she navigates a difficult home life, finding solace in books and encouragement from her kind teacher, Miss Honey, played by Jess Walker. At school, however, she must stand up to the terrifying headmistress Miss Trunchbull, portrayed by Pete Tihema.
“Matilda is a rebel because she’s trying to make things right when everything is going wrong in her life,” Sarah-Jane said.
“And she has telekinesis, so she can move things with her mind.”
Packed with witty lyrics, vibrant dance and memorable songs, the musical blends dark humour with heartfelt themes.
The girls say Revolting Children is a standout number, with a double meaning.
“The children are revolting against Miss Trunchbull, but they’re also revolting.”
Other favourites include Matilda’s solos Naughty and Quiet, which showcase both her mischievous side and emotional depth.
“It’s funny, upbeat, cheeky music – and you’ll remember the songs,” they said.
All three young actors say landing the role has been a dream come true.
“It is my dream role,” says Kyla, who has been performing since the age of four and recently appeared in Newsies Jr.
Sarah-Jane said she grew up singing along to the soundtrack, while Orla describes the opportunity as amazing.
The trio agree on one thing, this show is for everyone.
“Everyone in the whole entire town should come,” they say. “It’s suitable for all ages.”
Matilda the Musical opens at Theatre Whakatāne on May 13 and runs through to May 30. Tickets are available from iTicket.co.nz and the Whakatāne isite
