The latest round of the NZ Sixes proved successful for Eastern Bay driver Christina Orr-West.

Her three wins in Taupō last month have virtually wrapped up the championship for her unless disaster strikes in the next two rounds – a one-hour race in Taupō and the final round in Hampton Downs.

Racing against trucks and NZ6s, the 10-lap races are often exciting, and at Taupō it proved no different.

Orr-West, who is often on the wrong side of things when racing, said it was good to have things go her way for once.

“It was definitely a weekend that was enjoyable. I was down on pace a touch at Hampton, but felt like I was more on par with Brad (Wenzlick) with my pace of the car.

“I was a bit concerned with how the big beast would go at Taupō but she was like a rocket there.”

The first race featured an awesome battle between the pair, while race two saw the track with a lot of grip and her chasing the utes.

She was a full second quicker than Wenzlick in race two and managed to take line honours.

“I broke the lap record for that class in Bell. She performed well but I really burnt out my tyres. It made it a lot more difficult come race three.”

The last race saw her start way off the back, but Wenzlick had a mechanical failure and the next fastest to challenge her in that race had his clutch blow out, leaving Orr-West able to cruise to the finish.

“I don’t know what happened, but the racing gods were definitely on my side that day. I definitely put way too much pressure on them in race two. I had no tyres left. It wasn’t until we took them to Custom Exhaust that I saw how bad they were.”

She also needed a new steering rack.

“To win all three races and beat Brad was pretty cool. If there was another race we would have been screwed.”

Orr-West was stoked to get the course record in her class at Taupō with her time of 1.46.399.

“It’s cool to think I managed to get Bell to go that fast.”

She also has the lap record at Hampton Downs.

Four new tyres have been placed on Bell and with the steering rack replaced, she’ll be good to go for the one-hour event over Anzac Weekend.

“We know we are quick there; it will just be a case of how Bell handles in a long race like that and when we need to pit. It’s certainly going to be interesting.”

There is even the possibility of a national final with a North Island and South Island race which would see the North Island and South Island competitors battle it out.
