Navy chief guest speaker at Anzac Day

.

Chief of Navy Rear Admiral Garin Golding will be guest speaker at tomorrow’s Anzac Day civic service in Whakatane.

Members of the HMNZS Matataua unit will also attend the service, marching in alongside veterans and the Trident High School Service Academy.

Mayor Nándor Tánczos will welcome the community to the service, with Deputy Mayor Julie Jukes acting as Master of Ceremonies.

The service will include the laying of wreaths, playing of the Last Post, and reciting of the Ode of Remembrance in English and te reo Māori.

Mayor Tánczos said Anzac Day held deep personal meaning for many people in the district.

“Whether you join us at the War Memorial Hall, attend a dawn service at your local marae, or mark the day in your own way – we encourage you to take a moment to remember.”

The service will be supported by the EBOP Brass Band, Edgecumbe Choir, and Whakatāne Scottish Pipe Band. A community lunch will be provided at the Whakatāne RSA from 12.30pm. All are welcome to attend.
