Have a say on Tarawera awa catchment

.

A landmark plan to restore the health and mauri of Tarawera Awa and Te Awa o Te Atua (Matatā lagoon and surrounds) is now open for public consultation, marking a major milestone in the long term healing of one of the Bay of Plenty’s most significant waterways.

The Tarawera Awa Restoration Strategy Group has released its proposed strategy Te Rautaki Wai ki Tarawera ki Te Awa o Te Atua, and is calling on communities, landowners, iwi and stakeholders to have their say.

The strategy sets out a shared vision to restore water quality, biodiversity, cultural connections and community wellbeing across the Tarawera Awa catchment. Developed in partnership between iwi and local government, it gives effect to parts of the Ngāti Rangitihi Claims Settlement Act 2022 and establishes a long term framework for coordinated action.

Tarawera Awa Restoration Strategy Group chair Leith Comer says the release of the draft strategy is a significant moment for the awa (river) and the people connected to it.

“This is about turning generations of harm into generations of healing. The strategy reflects years of kōrero, collaboration and shared commitment to restoring the mauri of Tarawera Awa ki Te Awa o Te Atua.”

Mr Comer said public input was critical before the strategy was finalised. “This awa flows through many communities and supports many livelihoods. We want to hear from everyone who lives, works or has a connection to the catchment so the final strategy truly reflects a shared pathway forward.”

The draft strategy outlines clear objectives and desired outcomes, including improving water quality, restoring wetlands and habitats, strengthening cultural relationships with the awa, and supporting resilient communities. It also sets the foundation for a future action plan that will guide on the ground restoration over the next decade.

“Restoring the awa is a generational responsibility,” Mr Comer said. “This consultation is about shaping a future where Tarawera Awa and Te Awa o Te Atua are healthy, thriving, and valued by our mokopuna and generations beyond.”

Public submissions are now open and close at 4pm on Monday 25 May 2026.

The strategy is available online at www.tarawera.org.nz, or hard copies can be viewed at iwi offices and council service centres across Rotorua, Kawerau, Whakatāne and Matatā.
