As the winter weather kicks in, so too has Radio 1XX’s Pyjama Drive, collecting new winter wear for Eastern Bay children for distribution through local charity The Clothing Project.
Items being sought include new pyjamas, thermals, singlets, long-sleeve tops, pants and tights to fit ages one to 16 years.
To donate, take items to a local drop-off point before May 15. Drop-off points are New World Kawerau, New World Ōpōtiki, Peppers in Edgecumbe, and Radio 1XX at 267 The Strand in Whakatāne.
The drive, supported by New World Kawerau, ran for the first time last year, and 1XX director Sarah Galbraith said the station hoped to make it an annual event.
“For us it’s all about community. We want to make sure our local communities are really supported, and we love to give back.”
Mrs Galbraith said although The Clothing Project often distributed quality second-hand clothing, this year’s campaign focused on new items.
“We really want to make our local kids feel good and warm, and pyjamas wear out so quickly and they grow out of them so fast. We want them to feel snuggly in brand new pyjamas.”
The campaign will finish with a community Pyjama Party Day on May 15, where workplaces and schools are encouraged to wear pyjamas and support the cause.
Participating local schools are hosting ‘Pyjama mufti days’, where children can bring a gold coin donation to support the cause.
Mrs Galbraith said last year’s response was strong.
“Last year we had around 170 pyjama donations, and about $1,800 in cash donations. Our community always goes above and beyond; it was great to see everyone get involved.”
Eastern Bay residents are encouraged to donate and wear their pyjamas to work on May 15 (check with your boss first) to show support and help ensure children head into winter with something warm to wear.
