Closures planned for war memorial

People planning to hire the War Memorial Centre for events next year may need to look elsewhere.

Closure of the Whakatāne War Memorial Centre for at least six months is expected next year for planned improvements to the building.

Whakatāne District Council community experience general manager Alexandra Pickles said the closure was part of Phase 1 of the Rex Morpeth Recreation Hub redevelopment.

The centre, which includes the sports stadium, Little Theatre and reception lounge, is expected to close from early 2027.

“Current planning indicates the closure will be around six months, though both the timing and duration are indicative only – planning work is still under way,” Ms Pickles said.

“Confirmed closure dates will be communicated to users, and the wider community once finalised.”

It was also possible the closure could be longer than six months.

“There are further works planned to fully restore the War Memorial Hall, beyond the current budget, and if funding is approved to deliver these works, then the closure period would likely be extended. Completing all works as a singular programme would provide significant cost efficiencies and avoid the need for a further closure in the future.”

Works being delivered during this time included safety upgrades, electrical upgrades, fire protection system upgrades, heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning system replacement, weathertightness works, accessibility upgrades, and functional improvements to the Little Theatre, foyer and reception lounge.

“Works that don’t require a full closure are already under way, including reception lounge roof cladding replacement and Little Theatre theatrical systems safety improvements. Any short-term closures for these works will be localised and communicated well in advance.”
