Changes to plant variety rights to deliver real gains for East Coast growers

.

On Friday, Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minister Cameron Brewer announced increased Plant Variety Right terms for growers.

These changes to the Plant Variety Rights Act 2022 will strengthen plant variety rights and make a real difference for harming and horticulture sectors right across the East Coast, says MP for East Coast Dana Kirkpatrick.

“These changes will give more certainty to invest in better-performing crops and new plant varieties.

“In our region, where farming and horticulture are such a big part of the economy, access to stronger, more resilient and higher-yielding plant varieties directly benefit productivity and income.”

The updated rules will better protect the time and investment that goes into developing new plant varieties and extend the period those innovations are protected.

“That matters here because the East Coast is so often having to battle against severe weather conditions like drought, high winds and rain and land constraints. Having access to improved grass species or new fruit varieties that can handle those conditions is critical.

“These changes support the development of exactly those kinds of innovations.”

The reforms also restore provisional protection, meaning breeders are protected from the moment they apply for rights.

“This is crucial because it reduces the risk for people investing in new varieties. It means growers and breeders can move forward with more confidence, knowing their work is protected from day one,” Kirkpatrick said.

“This announcement supports the Government’s target of doubling exports within the next decade.

“By providing greater certainty and support, we are empowering plant breeders to keep innovating – driving economic growth and ensuring New Zealand remains competitive on the world stage.” Brewer said.

“When East Coast growers can produce more, improve quality, and access premium export markets, that flows through into jobs, local businesses, and our communities.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for the East Coast; I support these changes.”
