FOOD COLLECTION: Bella Lee and Aurelia O’Hagan (both in Cub section) and Morepork (Erin Nolan) greet customers at the entrance to New World during the 2025 Food Drive.

Winter may be coming, but Awakeri Scout Group is doing anything but hibernate as they plan the second of their soon-to-become-annual food drives in support of the Salvation Army Food Bank.
Last year, leaders Morepork (Erin Nolan) and Wheke (Amy O’Hagan) surprised the foodbank with a ute full of boxes, as well as some fresh food bought with cash donations.
“The foodbank ladies were in shock,” said Wheke.
“The Whakatāne community were so generous and we were able to restock the shelves for at least a little while.”
This year, they are back at New World Whakatāne, with the enthusiastic support of store manager Daniel Benbow and his staff.
This year’s drive is on Sunday, from 10am to 2pm.
Customers can purchase an extra item of food and give it to the Scouts manning the exit or donate cash for a fresh food purchase.
“We have chosen our cutest Kea Scouts to remind people at the entrance, while the older Scouts accept donations and thank people at the exit,” said Wheke.
Group leader Cupcake (Sally Vazey) said it was all about service to the community.
“This is a way for our kids to contribute selflessly without any benefit to themselves.
“They are donating their time and energy to benefit others, as are the leaders who are giving up their weekend to supervise.”
