Ōpōtiki Squash Club has successfully defended the prestigious Neeley Log, surviving a fierce challenge from its original holders, Whakatāne Squash Club, in a dramatic encounter decided by the narrowest of margins.
The highly anticipated fixture, hosted by Ōpōtiki, saw both clubs field eight-player lineups in a display of high-stakes regional squash.
Spectators were treated to an intense and evenly matched series of games characterized by exceptional skill, determination, and exemplary sportsmanship.
With the overall tie locked at 4-4 after the final matches, the tournament officials triggered a game countback to determine the winner.
Ōpōtiki ultimately edged ahead to retain the shield with a razor-thin 15-14 advantage in games won.
The victory ensures the coveted log remains in Ōpōtiki, extending the club’s impressive championship reign past the 12-month milestone.
Ōpōtiki will now shift its focus to next month’s defence, where they are scheduled to host a rising challenge from Waikite Valley Squash Club in June.
