Whakatāne entrepreneur Joe Harawira is continuing to take Eastern Bay innovation to the international market, with his premium non-alcoholic beverage brand Wai Mānuka expanding rapidly into the United States and Japan.
Founded in Whakatāne, Wai Mānuka is an official partner of Auckland FC, whose ownership group includes Anna Mowbray, Ali Williams and Steven Adams.
Over the weekend, Harawira attended the Auckland FC grand final alongside Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, where the pair discussed exporting, New Zealand innovation and the opportunities for Kiwi brands to succeed on the global stage.
Harawira said the conversation also focused on how organisations such as New Zealand Trade and Enterprise could continue supporting ambitious New Zealand businesses looking to scale internationally.
“What made the moment special for me was representing both Whakatāne and Māori business on such a significant occasion,” he said.
Less than a year after entering the New York market, Wai Mānuka products are now stocked in more than 80 high-end stores across New York City and are available through Amazon US.
The company is also preparing to begin manufacturing operations in Pennsylvania next month as part of its continued international growth.
“The goal is to continue growing Wai Mānuka internationally while showcasing a modern side of Aotearoa and creating something local people can be proud of.”
