Confusion continues over the new variable speed signs installed in Coastlands, with incorrect school zone times still being displayed despite earlier efforts to fix the issue.
The Beacon first reported on problems with the signs earlier this month, after concerns were raised about incorrect information being shown to motorists near Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Te Orini ki Ngāti Awa.
The signs, positioned at either end of Ocean View Road and on Fisherman’s Drive, were expected to reflect school drop-off and pick-up times. Instead, the displayed hours appeared to match the kura’s general operating hours, creating further confusion for drivers.
Ann-Elise Reynolds, transportation manager for Whakatāne District Council, said council staff were aware of the issue and were continuing to work with the kura to correct the signage.
“We’ve been working directly with the kura to clarify the most appropriate times,” Reynolds said.
She said new time overlays had been ordered and were expected to be installed by the end of next week.
“We’re focused on getting the signage correct and in place as soon as possible.”
Reynolds said school zone times were also being standardised across the district to make them clearer and easier for motorists to understand.
“This means times won’t always match individual school schedules exactly, but they will reflect the periods of highest risk,” she said.
The variable speed signs have been installed in Coastlands area to warn motorists they are approaching the kura and to encourage reduced speeds during busy school periods.
The signs are part of nationwide changes introduced under 2024 legislation requiring all schools across Aotearoa to have variable speed limits in place.
The new school zone speed limits are expected to come into effect in early July.
