It was a weekend to forget for the two Ōpōtiki men’s rugby teams.
Playing at home in front of a big crowd, the development team and premier team would have been hoping to put on some eye-catching performances for the crowd.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be as Tauranga Sports produced two of their better showings this season, to leave with maximum points.
First up was the development clash and although the scoreline was lopsided they did make massive improvements from their opening round contest in Tauranga.
The 84-14 loss is a good step forward for Ōpōtiki development, who were light on personnel as their opening game against Tauranga Sports was a 103-0 defeat.
So, being able to score a couple of tries through Kiwi Biddle and one of the Mokomokos was a positive.
In the premier game, Ōpōtiki had a few key figures out for the clash, which certainly made it more difficult.
It tested their depth and although they lost 61-5, they were in the contest for periods of the clash.
Tauranga Sports ran out one of their strongest line-ups this season, featuring some Steamers and Ngawha players.
They will be putting that result behind them and looking to rebound in style this weekend when they line up against Greerton Marist at Greerton Park.
Ōpōtiki played well against Marist earlier in the season and will be looking to get one back on them this weekend.
They will also be hoping the likes of Te Amo Wilbore, David Whyte and a couple of others are back this weekend.
Ōpōtiki posted their first victory a fortnight ago, so it showed they are more than competitive in this grade.
Following this match they still have a further three games at home and will be looking to make the most of those, while also getting a much-needed bye on June 20.
The Ōpōtiki women’s team had King’s Birthday off as no women’s rugby was played, however, they return to action this weekend with a home clash against Arataki at Princess Street Reserve.
