Whakatāne’s Bush Half Marathon returns next month with organisers hoping the event will be bigger and better than previous years.

Now in its third year, the event will be held on Saturday, July 12, beginning at the Ōhope Christian Fellowship Church on Maraetotara Road.

Originally established by Whakatāne Harriers Club as a fun event for locals, the Bush Half Marathon has steadily grown into an event that attracts athletes from across the North Island.

Harriers Club president William Doney has watched the event go from strength to strength and is looking forward to seeing a full start line.

“We started with an expectation of 30 runners, but 100 turned up. The following year we had 160 competitors, so I’m hopeful we can attract around 250 this year. Originally, we looked at the North Island running calendar and saw there was a large gap with no events, so we saw it as an opportunity to promote both Whakatāne and running,” said Doney.

He is particularly keen to see more children and families taking part together, something the Harriers Club has focused on for several years.

The event has been described as “where the bush meets the sea in perfect harmony”. More than just a run, it offers participants a true adventure, complete with breathtaking scenery, varied terrain and a strong sense of achievement.

The course takes competitors through native bush tracks, winding gravel roads and smooth sealed sections, all set against the backdrop of Whakatāne and Ōhope. Participants can choose from a 5km or 10km option, or tackle the legendary Bush Half Marathon, ensuring there is a challenge suitable for every level of experience.

This year, every participant who crosses the finish line will receive a finisher’s medal, regardless of distance. A sausage sizzle and refreshments will also be available at the start-finish area.

Interested runners can register online at https://whakatanebhm.weebly.com/.

Registrations close at 3pm on Sunday, July 6. Entries will also be available on the day, although a $10 late entry fee will apply, so organisers are encouraging competitors to register early.
