Whakatāne’s town centre and riverfront will be transformed into a glowing outdoor gallery next month as Trust Horizon Light Up Whakatāne returns for its fifth year.

Running from July 11 to 18, the free community festival will feature 20 light installations, sculptures and digital displays created by local and regional artists, inviting visitors to explore the town after dark.

The annual event has become a winter highlight for the district, attracting residents and visitors alike to experience art, music and entertainment in a unique setting.

Organisers say the festival is designed to bring people together during the colder months while celebrating creativity and community spirit.

“Light Up Whakatāne is about bringing light and joy to the darkness of winter,” they say.

The festival is a collaborative effort between Arts Whakatāne, the EPIC town centre group and Whakatāne District Council.

Festivities begin on Saturday, July 11, with a community celebration featuring live music, dance performances and entertainment. Opening night highlights include the Community Glow Parade, a dance carnival, a night market and the launch of the Light Up Whakatāne Art Trail.

Other attractions throughout the week include the EPIC Light Up Whakatāne Storefront Competition, encouraging local businesses to join in the festivities with illuminated window displays, Wednesday Wheels Night and the Bayleys Photobooth.

Visitors will be able to follow a map linking the 20 installation sites throughout the town centre and riverfront, creating a self-guided evening walk through a landscape of light and creativity.

Since its inception, the festival has grown into a significant cultural event for the district, showcasing local artistic talent while creating opportunities for community connection.

Organisers envision the festival continuing to evolve as a celebration of creativity, culture and community engagement, while helping to attract visitors and support local businesses during the winter season.

A key part of the festival’s success is its accessibility. All events and installations are free to attend, ensuring people of all ages and backgrounds can take part.

By removing financial barriers, organisers hope to create an inclusive event that encourages families, friends and visitors to come together and enjoy shared experiences through art and light.

Trust Horizon Light Up Whakatāne runs from July 11 to 18, with installations open nightly from 6pm to 9pm throughout the Whakatāne town centre and riverfront.
