Community dives in for Mid-Winter Swim

.

Around 200 brave swimmers ignored the winter chill on Sunday, taking the plunge at Ōhope Beach for the annual Radio 1XX Mid-Winter Swim.

Held at Mahy Reserve, the popular fundraiser attracted a larger crowd than last year, with participants donning an array of creative costumes while raising money for the Whakatāne Surf Life Saving Club.

The event raised about $350 through gold coin donations from swimmers, with additional fundraising from a barbecue run by the surf club, supported by Eastern Bay Dental. Bean There Dan That also donated $1 from every drink sold during the event.

Among the colourful costumes on display were a family of stingrays, a group of women in bikinis, boys dressed as princesses and even a candy cane, with prizes awarded to a range of best-dressed participants.

Radio 1XX director Andy Galbraith said this year’s event built on the success of previous years.

“This was a great turnout and I believe every year it gets better. There were certainly more people dressed up this year.”

The Whakatāne Coastguard also joined in, with 17 members taking part as part of a training exercise.

Despite the mid-winter temperatures, Galbraith said the water proved less daunting than many expected.

“The water was lovely, with participants staying in longer than expected. The day was fantastic, with the water not being a barrier for most.”

He said the event once again highlighted the community’s willingness to support local emergency services.

“Every year we are overwhelmed by the love and support our community shows each other in support of community services.

“Surf Life Saving is so important in summer and we are grateful for what they do in our community.

“A massive thanks to all those who came to support the Mid-Winter Swim and a special mention to Hunting & Fishing Whakatāne for their support in helping us to be able to run the event.”
