With the fast-approaching by-election for an Eastern Bay seat on our regional council, and because of the unclear reforms of local and regional councils that our government is currently weighing up, it is vital that voters think strategically regarding who is best to fill the vacancy left by the passing of our long-serving Kawerau mayor and regional councillor, Malcom Campbell.
I was personally approached to consider standing in the by-election, and the reason given was that I would bring experience in both central and local government to the table, which would possibly be helpful.
As someone who is deeply concerned about the vagueness of the Government’s intentions to super-size the governance arrangements for local services, claiming it would cost ratepayers less, I would like clarity around exactly what is going to be dumbed down.
I wrestled with the challenge regarding whether I should indeed stand as a candidate, until about a week ago when I saw that Toi Iti was offering to step back on to the regional council.
Iti has served for nine years on the regional council and, as such, has a very clear understanding of the risks for Eastern Bay residents. I rang Iti to get a clear sense of his understanding of the risks that any potential amalgamation could produce.
His response was clear and very well considered, and at the end of our conversation I felt a huge sense of relief regarding his suitability and his passion for representing Eastern Bay voters and property owners.
At a time when residents are going to need a councillor who is very approachable, a good listener and verbal communicator and who is open to both concerns and possible solutions, I will be voting Toi Iti for regional council and ask others to consider doing likewise.
With all we are facing regarding huge government-driven changes, a councillor with significant regional council experience and a clear passion for the Eastern Bay, is a gift we would be stupid to overlook.
Please ensure you are enrolled on the Electoral Roll and remember to vote.
Remember that:
■ The services we rely on
■ The need for affordable rates
■ The protection of local amenities that contribute hugely to the ongoing value of your property are all at risk, so please vote Toi Iti.
