Tonight’s the night for Whakatāne High School seniors eagerly awaiting their Rio Festival ball.

A 30-strong ball committee have been working hard this week to transform the school hall into a festival of vibrant Brazilian carnival colour.

Head students Caiden Simmons and Jiko Bryant said as a committee they came up with a range of concepts and themes before putting them out for all the year 12 students to vote.

Rio Festival proved to be the most popular theme,” Jiko said.

“I really want to give a shout-out to the committee for the dedication and hard work they’ve put in to help make this a great night for everyone.”

Although the theme is new, Caiden said the committee was committed to reusing many of last year’s decorations.

“We’ve reused a lot from last year but also wanted to put our own twist on the design. Many of the flowers are from last year’s ball, but we’ve also ordered a bunch of feathers from a local business and laser-cut Rio-themed signs and birds as part of the decorations,” he said.

“We’ve also created a giant illuminated Christ the Redeemer that will greet everyone as they walk in, to really give it that Rio feel,” Jiko said.

Music for the evening will be provided by a DJ from Massive Music, playing a playlist inspired by the musical tastes of the students.

Laser Photos will again be on site to provide professional photography, complemented by a photo booth set up in the drama room.

The doors will open at 7pm tonight with students dancing the night away in a smoke- and alcohol-free environment until 11pm.

Some memorable transport is expected with one of the most impressive entrances last year being aboard a boat.

Awards will be presented for Best Couple, King and Queen (year 13), and Prince and Princess (year 12).
